Toastmasters Meeting Summary - November 17th

Introduction:

Fellow members and Guests, Thank you to everyone who participated in last Thursdays Isis Meeting , it was immensely enjoyable. Thursday was a special night in that we experimented with a new timing system whereby speakers who run over time will receive two verbal warnings from the Timekeeper 30 seconds apart and then at the discretion of the Toastmaster of the evening will be asked to step down from the lectern. It has been agreed by the club that this is necessary in order to help us finish our meetings on time and leave the courthouse by the allotted time, not to mention practicing the invaluable skill of time managing our speeches. Thank you to everybody for your cooperation with this. It was a great Pleasure to welcome Area Governor Sue Munro and our guests Annika and Michelle.  Last but not least I am also pleased to announce that Nick Andrews has joined Isis.  Welcome Nick.  We hope to see you all back with us soon.

Table topics:

Thank you to Colin Jack for introducing the word of the day which on this occasion was 'green' and he encouraged us to use it in its many forms. We started with a captivating Table Topic session mastered by Anand. Each Speaker pondered on questions such as 'which book would you like to have written?';' which company would you like to be CEO of; if you are a Martian, what would you change about planet Earth?' Nick Andrews, Sarah Everleigh, Colin Jack and fatjon each gave very entertaining answers to these questions.

Prepared speeches and evaluations:

The second half as usual started with the prepared speeches part of the evening. We were fortunate to have a range of speakers,Gavin Hageman who is working from the Advanced communication,'speaking to inform' manual delivered a speech entitled, " how to fell a tree" and was assisted by Daniel acting as his tree. Gavin. was supported by our new member, Nick Andrews, doing his icebreaker speech from the competent communicator manual Thank you Nick for entertaining us with your fantastic speech about the North-South divide, your upbringing and Northern roots. Don O'Neill gave an interesting speech from the leadership program about his project to promote the Oxfordshire Toastmasters club's. Thank you Don.

Wrapping up:

Our president, Arjun presented the prizes and significantly new member Nick Andrews won best table topic for his answering of the question which book would you like to have written (he chose the Bible) and he also won best speaker for his icebreaker about his upbringing and the North-South divide. Congratulations Nick it was vry well deserved and your performance tonnight was outstanding. . Sue Munro(area Governor) won the best evaluator prize. Arjun announced that we could have a Christmas get-together on Thursday, December 8 and it was agreed that the arrangements will be finalised shortly. The experiment with the new timing mechanism was a success, although no one was actually asked to step down from the lctern.Gavin Hageman(author) did speak over his allotted 7 min and perhaps should have been asked to finish.I'm sure that as we get accustomed to this system it will become more  efficient as time goes on.

We actually finished 10 minutes early this evening  Largely due to being one speaker short but nevertheless , it was a slick evening in terms of time management.Well done and thanks to all who took on roles.
