Club Contest

Event Dates: March 1, 2012 - 7:00pm - 9:30pm

All are welcome to the first round of the International speech contest at Oxford Isis Speakers club.  Please see details of the contest.

Dear All
Prior to an agenda being published for the speech and evaluation contest on March 1st I have taken the liberty of announcing the contestants and judging panel below, along with an outline of the contest rules:-

Please note that this is a special event and we will not be following the usual format.  Guests are welcome and will be asked to follow contest etiquette.

Evaluation Contestants
Gail Buswell (to be confirmed)
Sarah Eveleigh
Svetlana Grytsenko (to be confirmed)
Maris Kopcke (to be confirmed)
Kate Tomes

Evaluation Contest Overview
The Evaluation Contestants will draw lots to establish the order of the evaluations.  A guest speaker (to be confirmed) will give a 5-7 minute speech, during which the Evaluations Contestants will be allowed to take notes.  Following the speech the contestants will leave the room and will be given 5 minutes to prepare their evaluations.  This will be under the control of the Sargeant at Arms.  After 5 minutes the written notes will be given to the SAA with the exception of the first Evaluator who wil be asked back in the room to give their evaluations.  Once complete the contestant can remain in the room.  The SAA will then call upon each contestant in turn to enter the main room to give their evaluations, returning their notes as they are called into the room.

The evaluations should be between 2 and 3 minutes.  Evaluations lasting less than 1 minute and 30 seconds or more than 3 minutes and 30 seconds will be disqualified. The usual green/amber/red lights will be in operation and no indication will be given if time is over-run.  Timing will commence once the Contestant has given their first definite verbal or nonverbal communication with the audience (usually the first word spoken, sound effect or staged act).

Speech Contest Overview
The Speech Contestants will be asked to complete item 1183, Speaker's Certification of Eligibility and Originality (this will be supplied on the day).  As with the Evaluation Contest contestants will draw lots for their position in the running order of the contest.  Up to and including the semifinal speech contest contestants are permitted to use the same speech, but are not required to do so (every participant in the finals of the International Speech Contest must present an entirely new and different speech than that given in any International contest since January 1st of the same year).  To be eligible for the contest Contestants must have completed a minimum of 6 projects within the Competent Communications manual.  The subject of the speech shall be selected by the contestant and must be substantially original (any quoted matieral must be so identified during the speech presentation).  All contestants will speak from the same platform; the lecturn will be available but not mandatory in its use.  Contestants are responsible for arranging their preferred setup of the lecturn.

The speeches will be between 5 and 7 minutes long.  Speeches lasting less than 4 minutes 30 seconds or more than 7 minutes and 30 secons will be disqualified.  The usual green/amber/red lights will be in operation and no indication will be given is time is over-run.  Timing will commence once the Contestant has given their first definite verbal or nonverbal communication with the audience (usually the first word spoken, sound effect or staged act).
